"We Are The Legion"

Smallville "Legion"

I'm a huge fan of "Smallville," there's no doubt about it. I didn't watched the series from the pilot episode, but I did catch up around the middle of the 4th season. When I first saw commercials for the premiere of the show, I thought that it was the dumbest idea that former broadcasting corporation, The WB, ever came up with. The story of how I came to enjoy the prime time hit is a rather ironic one. I remember when the promotional commercials for the show premiered when I was into "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," my first reaction to the show was that I thought that it was the must unrealistic and idiotic premise for a show, the life of the "Man of Steel" during his adolescent years and all the drama that goes along with it. With that in mind, I didn't even give it a chance.

About 4 years ago, I was really bored one and ABC Family decided to air all of the episodes from the previous seasons of for a "Smallville" Marathon. With nothing else better on and with the Disney Channel vs. Nickelodeon rivalry of who could put on a crappy cartoon show, I felt it was the only way to suppress my boredom. After two minutes of watching the pilot episode, I was immediately hooked. It got to the point where I just sat there for hours watching the show and watching the Clark Kent go about his days as a teen. It was unbelievable as to how they could take this Heroic and influential Superhero, and analyze recreate events during his childhood that shaped the way that he became one of the world's greatest and most powerful superheroes. As much as I would love to go on about how great it is, I won't, because that's not the point of this blog, I'm going to talk about what I think was one of the best episodes right next to the episode "Justice."
Smallville has entered it's eighth season, and the story of the show has started to delve more into his hero origins. The show likes to throw Superman colors as Clark's wardrobe (a lot of red and blue combination outfits), and people in the city of Metropolis have been rescued by this mysterious Red-Blue Blur. The writers are starting to throw more Superman Mythology into the show, they've done various episodes where Clark has encountered other superheroes and supervillains in their teen prime as well (The Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg, Black Canary, and The Green Arrow) and villains such as Brainiac and Doomsday (the monster that almost destroys Superman). There was even an episode where Clark teamed up with the Justice League during the 6th Season. So, let's just say that the show has intensified.
The eighth mid-season finale with the best friend of Clark, Chloe Sullivan, being kidnapped by the Doomsday monster of the day of her wedding to photographer Jimmy Olson as he is injured and taken to Star City Hospital under critical condition. However, the season picks back up write where it left off, as Clark examines the aftermath of the destruction at Chloe's wedding, a 31st Century terrorist known as the Persuader takes an axe and takes a chunk out of the Man of Steel. All of a sudden, superheroes from the 31st century, Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad, comes to Clark's rescue. Then they inform him that their mission is to destroy Brainiac, who has infected Chloe, before he destroys the world on that very day. The heroes are known as the Legion of Superheroes.
The Legion of Superheroes are the future version Justice Leagues where their foundations are established they way "Superman" would. The Legion is consisted of superheroes teenagers, however their names always ends in either -boy, -girl, -lad, or -lass. For example, the Founding Legionnaires are Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, and Lightning Lad, there's also Phantom Girl, Chameleon Boy, Bouncy Boy, Triplicate Girl, and may others. Though their names are pretty lame, they're pretty cool in my book (which isn't really saying a lot).

Cosmic Boy.Click to view full size image
Cosmic Boy is a fictional character, a comic book superhero in the DC Comics universe from Legion of Super-Heroes. He has the superhuman ability to control electromagnetic fields. He is a founding member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, along with Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl.

Saturn Girl.Click to view full size image
Saturn Girl (original) is a powerful telepath who can cast illusions, cause sedation, stun or kill people mentally with powerful mind bolts, cause physical damage with psionic objects, and even cause paralysis or cause someone to be in a catatonic state. She could block mental intrusions, and manipulate someone into doing her will, just by sheer willpower.

Lightning Lad.Click to view full size image
Lightning Lad has the ability to generate electricity and direct bolts of electricity accurately. He is also able to generate and manipulate electricity, he can also apply the electricity internally to his own body and muscles, allowing himself to move at a top speed of one third the speed of light (the speed of lightning) and range anywhere in between that and normal human speed. Lightning Lad can use his power destructively, such as to short-circuit electrical items, split boulders, burn objects with precision or shatter walls.
The episode was amazing, the casting for the roles of the legionnaires were incredible, it's amazing that they were able to hire actors and actresses to fulfill the roles of the legionnaires. Their acting was incredible to the point where they were able to bring to life the personalities of the characters from the comic books. The costumes were "Smallville-ed" and they were amazing (Smallville likes to make their own versions of costumes). They also had the Legion flight rings as well. The action in the show was up to par, there was nothing but mind-bending electro-magnetic pulses surging throughout the show. Even if you missed one electro-magnetic pulse when you blinked, it was guaranteed that another was soon come about the episode at some other point later on in the show. However, the show was not only action-packed, yet it was hilarious as well. The biggest thing in the DC Comic mythology is that every time a superhero from the future goes to the past (or present to the future or past) they are instructed not to inform them of any information that occurs at their time in order to prevent a time paradox. So, the entire episode consisted of Cosmic Boy trying to prevent Lightning Lad from spilling secrets about Superman in future. Throughout the show, Lightning Lad said comments like, "Kal...where's your cape at dude?," or "Why aren't we having this conversation up in the sky?" I laughed until I peed my pants. I would have to say that the only think that I didn't like about about the show was Lana Lang....why did they bring her back? If I were to rate the episode, I would give it 4.5 Legion Flight Rings out of Five. For now enjoy the fight clips from the show. "Long Live the Legion!"

Public Service Announcement: Munchausen Syndrome

Posted by Justin Bournes on 12:35 PM comments (0)

I want to take the time to write a blog about a disease known as Munchausen Syndrome. Munchausen syndrome is a type of factitious disorder, or mental illness, in which a person repeatedly acts as if he or she has a physical or mental disorder when, in truth, they have caused the symptoms. People with factitious disorders act this way because of an inner need to be seen as ill or injured, not to achieve a concrete benefit, such as financial gain. This is a disease that is constantly over looked by our society, which is why I'm happy that "Scrubs" decided to create a public service announcement for the disease. The More You Know!

President Barack Obama

January 20th, 2009 was a day in my life that I will never forget....and it's not because of Laura McGaughey's birthday. :) However, it was the day that the United States of America swore in the first African-American president, Barack Obama. I caught the tail end of his "Oath of Office," and watching Obama reciting the oath was almost surreal to me. Yeah, just blame Dr. Bapat for keeping us the entire time, because learning the syllabus for Inorganic Chemistry is far more important than watching the Presidential Inauguration. The past 43 Presidents have been Caucasian, yet it's just unbelievable that we are now at a point in history where a Black President is in charge of the country. Being able to witness history adds another story under my belt that I can pass down to my kids (just throwing this out there, it won't be for a long time until I have kids...Thank God). but, all of the events that they had for the day just didn't really hit me until the next morning. The inauguration speech, the first dance between the President and the first lady, Beyonce' performing at the Inauguration Ball; I woke up the next morning asking myself if that really happened, following another 10 seconds...it hit me....we have a black president, I'm proud/happy/honored to say that I voted for our First Black President. THUG LIFE!

RECOGNGIZE!!!!!! HELLZ YEAH!!!!!

So.....trendsetting seems to be the biggest thing in 2009....Ed from "Scrubs" can definitely set treds faster than you can say hyperdermic needle around Sacred Heart Hospital. Here is one of my random "Scrubs" moments from the 8th and last season of "Scrubs." ['tear]

Happy New Year

It is amazing to recollect on the entire year of 2008, and then you realize "Holy Crap....10 seconds until 2009!" In those brief 10 seconds, I reflected on everything that I accomplished back in 2008, it wasn't too much, but that just gives me the incentive to accomplish more in 2009. 2008 was a year that changed my life forever, I've made some new friends and lost some great ones, I've lost family members and I've gained an even stronger bond with the ones that I'm close with, quit my old job and obtained a better one full of excitement and keeps me on the edge of my toes, most importantly, I lost all of my ignorance and immaturity and became an individual who is harder, better, faster, and stronger (not attempting to quote Daft Punk here). But in my opinion, 2009 is going to be a great year, it's going to be the year for Change, Barack Obama's running for President of the United States, and I hope to accomplish bigger and better things in the days to come. Who knows what's going to happen. I look forward to the good and the bad. With all of this talk about the future, I always think I'm involved in a heroic graphic novel where every move I make affects my destiny....well, I guess I'll just have to make the right choices. After all....it is my destiny! Adios!

Turkey Time/Christmas Time

Posted by Justin Bournes on 9:44 PM comments (0)

It's that time of the year again (was that time of the year) where the cold-hearted behaviors of everyone in the world miraculously vanished and transitioned into the spirit of giving. One thing that I've noticed when it comes to the holiday season is that the spirit of giving starts off with a bang....Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, next to National Rihanna Day and my birthday, because I get to see my extended family. Throughout the year, I'm so busy with my school work, however, Turkey Day is the day that I get to throw my cautions to the wind and worry about how I'm going to enjoy my time with my family.

As a tradition, my family and I would dress to impress, then head on over to my grandmother's, a.k.a. G-Money's, apartment flat to enjoys some well-done, home-made turkey. Unfortunately, after I scarf down some turkey, the tryptophan kicks in and I'm ready to fall asleep. What I look forward to on Thanksgiving is that I get to roast my little cousins. Every year, they like to boast about how they accomplished something that I never have, and they're getting older to where they have sly remarks like..."Well, I'm the captain of the football team." However, I'm just like, congratulations, but in my head, I'm just repeating the same tired phrase over and over again, "Get Over Yourself!" But, they're family, and I'm stuck with them through thick and then.
This year we had Thanksgiving a little bit different, we decided to have Thanksgiving at my house with just the four of us, my mother, father, brother, dog, and I. Yes...our family is weird to the point to where we consider the dog to the equivalent of a person. But, it was very nice just having the four of us spend time together. Thanksgiving break broke a lot of boundaries for me, one thing was that I had an epiphany as to who my true friends were, and I actually established a friendship with my brother....with the assistance of LEGO Batman. After 15 years, I was able to sit down and enjoy a co-op game with my brother, and it was amazing. I feel like I've gained a long lost best friend, and I hope that that relationship continues.

"You'll Shoot Your Eye Out"

Just throwing this out there, I LOVE CHRISTMAS. Christmas is the most momentous and pivotal point in my life every year. For some strange reason, I have not an ounce of negativity in my body, and I have this urge to spread joy throughout the world. Every Christmas season, I just feel rejuvenated, and I obtain this random burst of energy that I don't wish to let go. The best part about Christmas is that there is always this feeling that I can't really describe, but, I will say that I have a sense of comfort. Most importantly, no Christmas is truly a Christmas without watching the 24hr "A Christmas Story" marathon. It's pretty much the best movie in the entire world. I've watched that marathon for the past 10 years straight, and it never gets old. However, looking at that movie every year as I get older makes me wish that I would've appreciated my childhood innocence a lot more. But, it's a part of life. I did a lot of things this year that I normally did when I was younger, I watched every holiday themed cartoon show that came on Nickelodeon. Rugrats, Hey Arnold!, CatDog, you name it. Nickelodeon also has some new cartoons that had some Christmas-themed shows. They're pretty good, but they can't beat the original shows that Nickelodeon had. On Christmas Day, G-Money and the Fam, came to our house to open some presents. I got a card with some cash from my Auntie Debbie, Guitar Hero Pajamas from my parents, and a funny shirt from my cousin. Every year I when I get my presents, I always reminisce to my younger years to when I would get Power Ranger Megazords. Those were the good old days. Even though I'm getting older, it's always sad to see the clock hit 11:59pm on Christmas Day...and then I wish that Christmas was everyday. And then I take that wish back, because according to the Fairy Oddparents, it's against the rules, and it would get boring....and Santa would run out of magic. But, it's the countdown until next Christmas.

Okay,

About a year ago, one of my best friends since Freshman year of college, Priyanka Deo, asked me if I wanted to dance with her for Diwali. I told her that I doubt that I'd have enough time in my schedule to attempt to learn a dance within a month, unfortunately being Priyanka's friend doesn't come with a choice, our relationship is to the point where if she asks me if I want to do something, I'm doing whether I wanted to or not....I'm okay with that. We danced for Diwali, which is an Indian holiday that is equivalent to the Christmas Holidays celebrated over here in the United States. We got to dance, and we rocked (as expected) and all of our friends came out to support us. We even got to perform for the 14th International Festival here at UIS, and we got to go on stage. However, what ticked me off the most about the performance was that Pri and the girls got to dance with smoke and fog, I wanted to dance with smoke and fog....it's just not fair I tell ya! Anyways, 2008 we auditioned for the 15th Annual International Festival, we we got a new set of people to work with us, and I just want to say that it was such an incredible experience to learn this dance. We performed about 3 times, I felt like a show girl at the Vu, however, it was soooo much fun, all of our friends came out to support us. I showed the video to my parents, and they won't stop looking at it.

Aside from being the life of the International Festival, they had such an amazing variety of food, it was unfortunate that I could try all of it, and that was because of two things:

1. The Hungarian Meatballs kept calling my name
2. The African Students at the university had us dance with them, and that took about another 2 hours! :)

There was so much going on that day, it was a little bit difficult to try to run to where all the other events were and then run back to make it in time for our dance. I guess it was a great feeling to be apart of something big, and having everyone congratulae us on a job well done. However, I am a little ticked that Prema Babuhead tried to take the spot from me during the drops in our performance. So, I did have some videos of the performance, but...unfortunately, my harddrive crashed :( Until the next post, Thug Life!

This Isn't Where I Parked My Car........

So, good morning everybody, as you can see I've been a tad bit busy for a while, to the point where it was a little bit difficult to try to write a blog. However, I'm back and better, taller, and more facial hair than ever....not really, however, Derek Rhodes has more facial hair thought. But, for the upcoming week, I will be blogging about twice a day, and I have some new things that I want to throw in my blog. The first thing is I want to do a mock of "The Office" interviews, where I interview the people that live on my floor. The next thing is that I want to try to do a spoof of a music video, and most importantly, keep you guys updated on how crazy my life is, and is going to get. Until the next post.....TTFN.....TA TA FOR NOW! THUG LIFE!
