Turkey Time/Christmas Time

Posted by Justin Bournes on 9:44 PM

It's that time of the year again (was that time of the year) where the cold-hearted behaviors of everyone in the world miraculously vanished and transitioned into the spirit of giving. One thing that I've noticed when it comes to the holiday season is that the spirit of giving starts off with a bang....Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, next to National Rihanna Day and my birthday, because I get to see my extended family. Throughout the year, I'm so busy with my school work, however, Turkey Day is the day that I get to throw my cautions to the wind and worry about how I'm going to enjoy my time with my family.

As a tradition, my family and I would dress to impress, then head on over to my grandmother's, a.k.a. G-Money's, apartment flat to enjoys some well-done, home-made turkey. Unfortunately, after I scarf down some turkey, the tryptophan kicks in and I'm ready to fall asleep. What I look forward to on Thanksgiving is that I get to roast my little cousins. Every year, they like to boast about how they accomplished something that I never have, and they're getting older to where they have sly remarks like..."Well, I'm the captain of the football team." However, I'm just like, congratulations, but in my head, I'm just repeating the same tired phrase over and over again, "Get Over Yourself!" But, they're family, and I'm stuck with them through thick and then.
This year we had Thanksgiving a little bit different, we decided to have Thanksgiving at my house with just the four of us, my mother, father, brother, dog, and I. Yes...our family is weird to the point to where we consider the dog to the equivalent of a person. But, it was very nice just having the four of us spend time together. Thanksgiving break broke a lot of boundaries for me, one thing was that I had an epiphany as to who my true friends were, and I actually established a friendship with my brother....with the assistance of LEGO Batman. After 15 years, I was able to sit down and enjoy a co-op game with my brother, and it was amazing. I feel like I've gained a long lost best friend, and I hope that that relationship continues.

"You'll Shoot Your Eye Out"

Just throwing this out there, I LOVE CHRISTMAS. Christmas is the most momentous and pivotal point in my life every year. For some strange reason, I have not an ounce of negativity in my body, and I have this urge to spread joy throughout the world. Every Christmas season, I just feel rejuvenated, and I obtain this random burst of energy that I don't wish to let go. The best part about Christmas is that there is always this feeling that I can't really describe, but, I will say that I have a sense of comfort. Most importantly, no Christmas is truly a Christmas without watching the 24hr "A Christmas Story" marathon. It's pretty much the best movie in the entire world. I've watched that marathon for the past 10 years straight, and it never gets old. However, looking at that movie every year as I get older makes me wish that I would've appreciated my childhood innocence a lot more. But, it's a part of life. I did a lot of things this year that I normally did when I was younger, I watched every holiday themed cartoon show that came on Nickelodeon. Rugrats, Hey Arnold!, CatDog, you name it. Nickelodeon also has some new cartoons that had some Christmas-themed shows. They're pretty good, but they can't beat the original shows that Nickelodeon had. On Christmas Day, G-Money and the Fam, came to our house to open some presents. I got a card with some cash from my Auntie Debbie, Guitar Hero Pajamas from my parents, and a funny shirt from my cousin. Every year I when I get my presents, I always reminisce to my younger years to when I would get Power Ranger Megazords. Those were the good old days. Even though I'm getting older, it's always sad to see the clock hit 11:59pm on Christmas Day...and then I wish that Christmas was everyday. And then I take that wish back, because according to the Fairy Oddparents, it's against the rules, and it would get boring....and Santa would run out of magic. But, it's the countdown until next Christmas.
